A look at this ViewSonic VP2770-LED monitor review will reveal all you need to know about it. Including why it might not be the best for you personally.
A couple of years back Viewsonic was among the best LCD monitor manufacturers. A reputation they sadly lost somewhere along the line. But with the ViewSonic VP2770-LED monitor in our review today, they have worked really hard in it. To reaffirm their position as one of the best manufacturers of great computer monitor products. Because this monitor is equipped with a superior panel, good factory calibration, outstanding color characteristics, full ergonomic support, sufficient connectivity, and many more.
The official product website says that it is a professional grade IPS panel monitor that is ideal for photo editing, video production, design, architecture and any other application that requires accurate colors and perfect viewing angles.
However, according to TFT Central (www.tftcentral.co.uk), there are some errors in the product description that may have found their way there either by design or by default. For example, the manufacturer description says it is an IPS panel monitor. But in reality it is made of PLS panels. The manufacturers also say it is a 10-bit color depth display. That supports up to 1.07 billion colors. But it was found to be made of an 8-bits color depth. That utilizes a frame rate control (FRC) technology to deliver more colors. These clarifications are necessary for you to make an informed decision about it.
Ideally, everyone wants a good monitor that offers exceptional performance and a good user experience. You need to consider some factors when searching for that perfect monitor that will provide everything you need. And enhance your user experience. Among the most important factors to consider includes resolution, connectivity, adjustment options, panel type, extra features, etc. We shall soon find out if they are exactly what this monitor offers you in our review today.

- Design and features
It is an all black monitor with a matte plastic at its base, stand and bezel. The middle of its lower bezel features a faded grey Viewsonic logo. While the top right corner features a more distinct “VP2770-LED” logo. The bezel looks fairly thin for a monitor of this size. Because it measures just about 21mm on all edges, thanks to W-LED backlighting that it is made of.
It is quite stable arguably because of its three legged stand and thick arm. The stand however takes much of desktop space. Because the legs of the stand extend a lot to the front and back as well. The stand supports a 5.3-inch height adjustment, 20 degrees tilt, 360 degrees swivel, and a 90 degrees pivot that allow you to switch to portrait mode and back. The bottom of the screen is roughly 88mm above the desk at the lowest height adjustment. And about 254mm at the highest height adjustment.
Most of the connectors you may need are located at the back underside of its panel. The wide array of ports include DVI-D (HDCP certified), Displayport, HDMI, VGA, two USB 3.0 upstream ports, two USB 2.0 downstream ports, and an audio output.
It is important to note that only DVI and DisplayPort can support the UHD (ultra-high definition) resolution of 2560 x 1440 that it supports. Because there is a bandwidth limitation for HDMI and VGA that makes them unable to support that resolution. However, these connectors are still useful for those who may want to connect other devices like DVD players etc. Cables provided include DVI, VGA and DisPlayPort. But an HDMI cable is not included in its package.
- Onscreen Display (OSD)
The lower right bezel of this monitor has 5 touch-sensitive buttons. The power button is located on the far right with a thin LED backlight. And it beams blue and amber in normal and standby modes respectively. Button one brings up the OSD menu which you can scroll using the first two buttons that works as the up and down arrow keys. Button 2 brings up a quick access to the listed video inputs.
This monitor does not offer a variety of picture settings like many others in its category. For instance, there is no saturation, hue and brightness settings for each color unlike NEC MultiSync PA271W that is similar to it. And adjustments for black level and white balance is also not provided with this monitor.
It only offers contrast, brightness and color temperature settings in its Native default settings. And there is a Color User mode function that allows you to adjust its RGB color values. Three gamma presets and two Eco mode settings are also provided with it. Overall, the OSD is below expectations and needs a lot of reworking if possible. To bring it to the level where brands like Dell have reached.
Responsiveness and Gaming
Despite the low 12ms G2G response time that it features, this monitor works much better for fast pace games and moving images than most other monitors that feature a much lower response time in their specs. Because a Response time compensation (RTC) technology is used to enhance responsiveness which in turn prevents ghosting in it. A response time control function in its OSD menu also allows you to adjust the overdrive level using options like standard, advanced and ultra-fast.
Its responsiveness when you use it in the standard mode is fairly good. Although a certain degree of motion blur was detected in it. Using it in the advance mode reduces the blur significantly making images on display look clearer and sharper. This happens as a result of quicker pixel transitions in this mode. However, its Ultra-fast mode sometimes produces excessively fast pixel transitions. Which in turn displays visible trails behind a picture. Overall, the advance mode is best for gaming.
Texts and General Office Work
Its small pixel pitch value of 0.233mm produces very small texts. You may find the texts on it a bit uncomfortable to read. Especially if you are upgrading from a small sized monitor. Like a 19-inch or a 22-inch display. White backgrounds look good on it, thanks to the light AG (Anti-glare) coating that was used on it. Its default brightness is too bright for office use. And should be adjusted downwards to provide a decent luminance.
Being an 8-bit (with FRC) PLS panel monitor with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 (109 ppi). And offering a matte finish is all you need for a perfect image quality on display. This monitor does not support wide gamut colors but it covers the full sRGB color space. Moreover it covers about 78% of Adobe RGB color gamut, and 81% of the NTSC color space. Which is reasonably impressive on the overall.

Other aspect of its performance
- Color Performance
According to TFT’s CIE graph tests, it reproduces accurate colors right out of the box. All the three primary colors that was tested with it are within the acceptable color ranges. Colors on it also exhibit a great level of uniformity and vibrancy on the color scale tests performed on it. And test photos used on it gave naturally looking skin tones.
However, its poor grayscale reproduction resulted to a less than impressive shadow detail. It is in fact difficult to differentiate between the black and the two final dark grays. However the highlight detail on it is perfect.
- Viewing Angles
Its PLS powered LCD panel provides enough wide viewing angles. There is no loss of luminance or color shifts when it is viewed at off angle positions. The Anti-Glare coating on it also helps in this regard. Because it prevents most reflections from reaching it.
- Backlight Dimming
This monitor does not use Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) for backlight dimming. Unlike some other monitors. Even with no brightness at all, you won’t see any white line splitting on its screen unlike what is common with some other monitors. This is great news for those who hate flickering backlights. Because you won’t experience it with this monitor at all.
- Power Consumption
Using it in one of its Eco modes ensures you get the best energy efficiency with its LED backlight powered technology. It consumes about 30-watts when you use it in Eco Mode. And it still provides fairly bright pictures in this mode. There is a Conserve mode in it that reduces power consumption substantially to 21-watts. But pictures on it looks a bit too dim in the Conserve mode. This is slightly less than what the LED backlit powered NEC MultiSync EA274WMi consumes. Which is about 32-watts in the Eco Mode. And it is much better than the CCFL-backlit powered NECPA271W. That uses about 77 watts in the same mode. Overall it is very efficient in energy and power consumption.
- Brightness Level
According to TFT Central, the factory preset brightness of this monitor is at 100%. With a luminance level of 300cd/m2. Which will be too bright for your eyes. And should be adjusted to a much lower level of about 18%. That will reduce the luminance to a reasonable level of 121cd/m2. This adjustment seems a bit radical but gives perfect results when implemented.
- Luminance Uniformity
There is a slightly variable luminance uniformity in this monitor. Its center and surrounding areas are uniform. But the left and right edges significantly deviate from the average value with most monitors.
- Native Default Set Up Versus The User Color Preset
Native default set up in this monitor is characterized by an excessively high level of luminance. Which is at a 100% brightness level. Though colors are accurate, even, and moderate. And are not too warm or too cold. However, some blue and red shades are slightly oversaturated in it. While some green shades are a bit short. Default gamma values in it is excellent. Though they are a bit high in dark grays. White point is within the acceptable range. While its black depth is just average.
The overall default color performance of this monitor is evidently not good enough. Gamma is fairly good but a bit too high in light grays. White point is too cool while color accuracy is not as good as in the native preset mode. And though there is a User Color preset mode in it that allows you to adjust the individual RGB colors, it is quite limited. You don’t need to worry much about this because calibrating it gives a much better result. Which we recommend you do before making use of it for color critical purposes.

Eco-mode and energy saving features
It comes with Eco-friendly features that makes it very much Eco-friendly. Because it uses a proprietary Eco-mode function that enables it to save up to 40% of energy. With the eco-mode function, you have the option to adjust it’s brightness to save energy. Moreover, you get to save the planet on a global scale and prolong the life of its lamp with the use of its eco-friendly features. And it helps to reduce eye fatigue as well.
Wide Quad HD Resolution
It offers you a high resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels across its widescreen. Known as WQHD resolution (wide quad HD resolution). That is four times that of traditional 720p panel monitors. Meaning it provides about 80% more pixels to compare with other monitors using a standard 1080p display resolution. With this high resolution, it is able to display a lot of image details that is ideal for a great view on its screen. And with it, it is able to display true HD content. Its high resolution comes with a native 16:9 aspect ratio that enables it to deliver exceptional images in their truest and original colors.
From what we’ve seen so far in this ViewSonic VP2770 review, it is obvious that it is a superior monitor that is insightfully designed to offer you exceptional color performance.
With its high 2560 x 1440 WQHD resolution, you will enjoy stunning high definition details for both texts and images. It is one of the best professional grade monitors to choose for photo editing and for your home or office work. It has an overall rating of 4 out of 5 stars on most webstores where it has been reviewed including Amazon.com. Meaning it received a high rating from majority of those who reviewed it.
It is a high performing monitor for photo editing, home entertainment, and office use that is insightfully designed to maximize your user experience. Whether you are a gamer, photo or text editor, or a movie lover, this monitor from Viewsonic is one of the best in the market for you. Because it displays pictures and images excellently with the help of its 2,560 x 1,440 WQHD high resolution. What you get with this monitor is super high quality and sharp colors for images, texts and movies.
It is most suitable for various kinds of professional activities such as design, video production, digital photography, architecture or other types of application that require true colors.
Its time to conclude this ViewSonic VP2770-LED review and decide if it is the best for you. Overall it is easy to fall in love with it. Because of its decent color performance, wide viewing angles, full ergonomic support, sufficient connectivity options and more. Which are very likely to impress many users. However, its dark gray performance and color management settings don’t quite hit the mark for many.
It is very much ideal for a decent performance in a wide range of applications. Especially at the price range which it is sold. Unlike other high end professional graphics display that cost way more than it. But I will recommend the NEC MultiSync PA271W if you have the budget for it. Because it is meant for professional graphic artists that require a more adequate calibration options and a perfect grayscale performance. However, you should be prepared to dig a little deeper into your pockets for the Nec monitor I just mention.
Besides that, choose the ViewSonic Vp2770 for its average price as a professional grade display. And for its many features with great perfomance .
